Thich Nhat Hanh used the term “Inter-being” to describe how everything is intimately connected. He was no stranger to adversity; as a Vietnamese Buddhist in the late 60’s he advocated for peace. His country was divided into the communist North (allied with Russia and China) and the South (supported by France, the US and others.) The war lasted over 10 years, and was an ideological battle between superpowers. The US involvement sparked activism and the first modern anti-war movement in America.

The shocking impermanence of it all. Life, death and everything in between! We humans long for predictability and stability to feel safe (our primal brain). Even things we’ve come to rely on – our democracy, the climate – can quickly (to us) undergo radical change. When experiencing something distressful, it’s helpful to know it will pass. My last group of healing school graduates were from all over the country, with unique backgrounds. An established acupuncturist, a burned out massage therapist (empath!), a Reiki practitioner, an herbalist, psychologist, juvenile probation officer and mothers with no previous experience came together. Why? They all wanted to start or expand a professional healthcare practice. The common thread was a desire to grow spiritually, and learn specific ways to bring healing to others.

I’m still inspired by Pope Francis, and have been communicating with him on the “other side.” I’ve done this for clients, usually after a sudden death (especially suicide), as there are many unresolved issues and questions. It’s just one area you can apply energy healing skills. I wish more people understood that you can do it yourself! Not only for situations around death; it opens a rich field of interaction with any soul you want to engage with. What’s the value of this kind of communication?

Observing the ceremony around Pope Francis’ death reminded me of the details of that transition. Not just for a Pope, but for everyone (eventually!) For instance, the 3-day official mourning period is common in many religions. At the moment of death the soul departs from the body in an instant. What’s left is a discarded shell - it’s served the purpose as a vehicle for an individual lifetime. And yet the remaining physical form still contains the vital energy of that person on a cellular level.

Certain moments bring the whole world together; a global consciousness arises focused on a singular event or person. The death of Pope Francis is one of those. He exemplified Catholic ideals; universal values of love, service, compassion and courage. An unexpected choice, he was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American Pope. He continued to surprise his entire papacy! In an indication of what was to come he took the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, who embraced humanity and all of creation.

In its broadest definition, the earth means the planet and everything it supports. Animals, plants, rocks, microbes, insects, the atmosphere, the surface and all that rumbles below it. The saying “everything between heaven and earth” speaks to that, and includes the cosmos! Part of the big picture, the actual earth - the soil - is so basic it's taken for granted. It’s literally the ground we stand on, but doesn’t get as much attention as polar bears, butterflies or birds.

In this time of anxiety and loss, it was great being in the group energy field at the “Hands Off…” gathering. It was a show of strength and purpose. I didn’t witness any anger or sense any fear – it was an outpouring of compassion and concern. Courage and hope are contagious! Between Covid and technology we’ve become more isolated. In this world-wide contraction, there is solace in connection - with other people, the earth and the divine. Right now, the earth is offering us proof of abundance!...
