Portals

Oct 17, 2026

Portals… an en-trance, an entry-way. I love the architecture of portals, especially the doorways into sacred spaces. Often a series of shapes are repeated to draw you in and emphasize the depth of the transition, inviting us to open up to - more. The door carries symbology in many ceremonies, like carrying the bride “over the threshold” into a new life. Some outdoor entrances go into a circular space, where you travel around the sacred center. The labyrinth and medicine wheel are like that.

These are intentionally created to promote a meditative state, when we are more available for intuitive messages. Altars do the same, if only momentarily. Ritual itself is an invitation into timelessness. Ancestors built temples and mounds where light struck a certain spot to indicate celestial events like equinoxes and solstices. Mounds were made for burial too - another type of transition into other realms that all humans make. Egyptians were buried with boats, riches and even servants to assure a more comfortable entry to the “other side".

All these are human creations. There are also natural portals known by those who could sense them. Countless standing stone configurations show the way into portals that can immediately pop you into a different reality. Natural portals can also be accessed by some kind of tunnel or opening in the earth; Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings” went into a cave to cross between the worlds of the living and the dead.

There are other, more literal, means of transport to another place. Magical people in the Harry Potter books had to find a physical object - a portkey - to travel to a different location. Much of our sci-fi and the current attempts at space exploration use a space-ship as the vehicle. Yet there have always been travelers who could move between realities/dimensions/realms at will.

The shamanic traditions have utilized and taught this ability for as long as we know. Often ceremony was used to underline the distinction between physical and psychic spaces. Journeys were undertaken with intention and a purpose, usually to help someone. All humans have this ability! There are those using traditional technology to travel to other planets, but human consciousness is the greatest of all technologies.

We do have ancient glyphs of otherworldly travelers coming in spaceships! In modern times we wonder what to expect, how we might approach - or be approached - by other civilizations. The answer is now being transmitted loud and clear, if we are willing and able to listen. Humans are the vehicle for communicating with these “others”; you may rely on another person to be the antennae, but know, and be inspired by, the fact that YOU are also potentially a conduit. Call it being “intuitive” if you like…

Peace, love and healing -
